I was not a runner growing up and other than church league basketball, I didn’t play organized sports. I wouldn’t classify myself as un-athletic but I definitely was not in shape. My life changed in grad school when with 40 extra pounds, I tore my ACL playing pick-up basketball. I made a commitment on that day to get in shape. I started out with 5Ks and 10Ks, lost some weight, before deciding to train for my first half-marathon. I trained on my own for 2 half-marathons and a marathon before moving to Houston in 2003. I joined Houston Fit and quickly realized all of the beginner mistakes that I made. After a couple of years training with the group, I became the Fall Marathon Head Coach training over 100 athletes each year. Of more importance though, I met my wife and co-organizer, Liz, through Houston Fit. We left Houston in 2008 and have missed the training group ever since. Over the years I have completed 19 marathons, 4 ultra-marathons, and countless other distance races including 2 half-ironmans. Now that we are settled in Rhode Island, we are ready to pay it forward and help others reach their goals of completing their marathon or half-marathon. We understand firsthand the benefits of group training.
